Mooring system design should be an early component of the overall design spiral

Site information (wind, waves, current) will influence the device design while depth, soils, and motion tolerance will drive the mooring design. The two design processes should not be separated. A mooring system must be:

  • Strong enough to handle the extreme load conditions, while being light enough to be deployable and in some cases, retrievable.
  • Designed to maintain a good balance between keeping the marine platform in a fixed location while allowing it to move slightly to minimize stresses.
  • Affordable, but robust enough to accomplish its assigned tasks.

Numerical design tools such as WAMIT or ANSYS AQWA are useful in this process. Troubling resonances between the device and the mooring system can be identified and designed around. In some cases strip theory programs such as VisualSMP can be useful on floating systems where wave loading dominates.

CFD/FEA tools can then be used to address critical system components. Physical modeling of the device and the mooring system at scale may be needed for novel designs.
